1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die - #8 - Asteroids

Asteroids
Platform: Arcade

Approximately 2.5 years ago I did my last entry in this series. Needless to stay, stuff has happened in the interim. Namely, life. But, I do love gaming so I knew I'd get back to this eventually. And...here we are!

Today's entry is another oldie but a goodie:

That's right...Asteroids. Simple in design, difficult in...well...mastery? Difficulty? Both?

The objective of the game is to not die. You are that tiny triangle on the screen and everything else is out to kill you. Being in space, you move in perpetual motion...i.e. your jets shoot in one direction and you are propelled in the opposite direction until acted upon in another direction. In the second picture, I have just died at the top of the screen. Thanks, UFO.

When you shoot the big asteroids they become...well...smaller asteroids. And all of them are just flying through the screen until they kill you or kill them. Reaching the edge of the screen only makes them continue flying on the opposite side. Oh, but good for you, you score extra lives with each 10,000 points. Which is easier said than done, as seen below:

NOTE: I did break 10,000 to prove that one did actually get awarded the extra lives....I failed to capture that however. Just trust me that it wasn't much over the 10,000 threshold.

All in all, a simple game but I can see how this game was a quarter grabber back in the day. In fact, I'm certain people actually survived long enough to score millions of points. Also, many modern games have tried to emulate the action from Asteroids to varying degrees of success. If you get a chance, play this game. It is quite solid.

Here's an example of from the YouTubes:
